Ceramic White Foo Dogs
Ceramic White Foo Dogs
Add some Chinoiserie to your shelves with these white ceramic Foo Dogs. Foo Dogs originated from China as guardian stone lions meant to protect. Since these lions resemble the Chow Chow and Shih Tzu dog breeds, the English nicknamed them "Foo Dogs." Foo Dogs are always meant to be displayed in pairs, as one is female (yin, symbolically protecting the people in the home) and one is male (yang, symbolically protecting the structure of the home itself). You can tell the gender by what's beneath their paws. The male holds a ball (representing the world) and the female holds a puppy (representing a nurturing spirit). The correct way to position your foo dogs, according to feng shui, is with the female on the left and the male on the right, as represented in the photo. These foo dogs make beautiful bookends; and white ceramic has the color tone and shine to brighten any space, particularly the dark corners on shelves. (Note: there is a slight crack about 1mm in length at the mouth of the female (left) but the ceramic is structurally sound, and has not been glued. This subtle flaw is not noticeable unless you closely examine the piece.)
